Responsibilities of a Risk Owner

Last updated: November 20, 2025

A risk owner is the individual or team responsible for overseeing a specific risk throughout its lifecycle. They ensure the risk is properly monitored, addressed, and reported on, even if they are not the ones directly performing remediation work.

Responsibilities typically include:

  • Accountability: Owners are responsible for the risk’s overall lifecycle—identification, mitigation, and ongoing oversight.

  • Decision-making: Owners determine what controls, treatments, or remediation activities are needed.

  • Tracking progress: Owners monitor whether mitigation plans are being implemented and whether the risk level is changing.

  • Reporting: Owners provide updates to leadership or compliance teams about the status and impact of the risk.

  • Escalation: Owners escalate issues if the risk worsens or if mitigation isn’t effective.
