Linking Documents to Controls

Overview

Linking documents to controls is how you use documents to validate controls. When a document is linked to a control and published, that control can pass. Linking can be done either from the document’s page, or from the control’s page.

When to Use

• You want a control to be satisfied by a published document.

• You need to connect evidence to specific controls, especially custom controls you have created.

• You are supplying additional compliance validation for controls.

How to Link Documents to Controls

To link a document to controls from the document detail page:

1. Navigate to Compliance → Documents and open the document (click the document name).

2. Click the Controls tab.

3. If the document has no linked controls yet, you'll see an empty state. Click Add controls.

4. In the dialog that opens, search for controls by name or control code.

5. Select the controls you want to link.

6. Click Add (or the confirm button) to complete.

Linked controls appear in the Controls tab. The document must be published for it to satisfy these controls.

Note: You can also link documents to controls from the control side. Navigate to a control's Testing tab and use the Documents section to add documents. This bidirectional linking gives you flexibility—you can work from either the document or the control side, whichever is more convenient for your workflow.

Unlinking Documents from Controls

To remove a document from a control:

1. Navigate to the document's Controls tab.

2. Find the control you want to unlink.

3. Click the unlink icon next to that control.

4. In the confirmation modal, provide a reason for unlinking. This information lets your teammates and auditors know why this was deactivated.

5. Confirm the unlink action.

Note: The document is no longer linked to that control. The control will not be satisfied by this document. If no other tests satisfy this control, you will need to connect other tests in order to provide evidence of compliance.
